Two teens leave their baby on the doorstep of the Blessings’ farmland and drive away. One of the groundsmen staying at the house, Skip Cuddy, find the little girl in the garage and takes her as his own. He keeps the whole thing a secret from the cold and quiet estate’s owner, Lydia Blessing, for a few weeks before she stumbles upon the baby herself.

All of this is the making for what seems to be a dramatic ending, right? Wrong. Unfortunately, Quindlen isn’t one for dramatics and the story softens. Instead of it leading to backstabbing, murder, and hatred she makes sure that it ends in a realistic and non-shocking way.

I believe Quindlen would like the reader to take away the concept of family and not judging a book by its cover instead of scandal. This makes the story heartfelt and enjoyable but not a page turner. A quick read that was delightful but not one that I would recommend if you have a few other more exciting options.
