I decided Amy Poehler was my favorite comedian after I saw a rerun episode of Saturday Night Live’s skit, “I’m No Angel”. As Poehler shimmied around a seedy bar pregnant picking up cowboys I was dying. If you haven’t seen it yet, get off my blog, and click here. It is well worth it!
Despite my bias love for Poehler, I have also read Tina Fey’s “Bossypants”, Mindy Kaling’s “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me”, and Lena Dunham’s “Not That Kind of Girl”. Surprise, surprise I think “Yes Please” is the most hilarious. I believe this due to the fact that Poehler doesn’t just make the book a memoir of her life events. She also throws in hilarious motivation quotes like, “no one looks stupid when they are having fun” and other random points she has decided, ie. why plastic surgery is weird. She is able to make you feel that you are stepping into her entire present lifestyle when you are reading instead of just looking back on her past.
I feel as though I am a semi funny person but I pride myself on being someone that likes to bounce off other people to make laughter. A modern age bullying as you will. Poehler feels the same (so that means we are identical). She credits every skit she does to someone else’s inspiration and creative motivation that they allude on to her. I knew she was hilarious but I didn’t realize how great of a person she was underneath all the laughs. Just the fact that she named her kids Archie and Abel and she doesn’t care at all with that decision shows her confidence.
I definitely advise you to pick this book up under one condition. You purchase as a hardcover book and not as a kindle. The images, font, and random inserts that she includes just will not come across as well in digital form. Also, you will look cool to all your friends if you have this on your coffee table.
