3.5 out of 4 stars.
I am now an Aziz fan for sure after reading this book! I have never seen any of his stand up or watched any of his critically acclaimed Netflix series but I have heard how funny he is from word of mouth and that lead me to picking this book up at the library.
Most of the books I have read by comedians like “Yes Please” by Poehler, “Why Not Me?” by Kaling, and “Bossy Pants” by Tina Fey have all wrote a book on their own life. Ansari took a different route and wanted to research and discuss the topic of what romance is like in the 21st century. He goes into topics such as online dating, cheating, sexting, and different countries’ view on relationships. He actually finds crazy statistics that are educational and taught me a lot. I think that is what I loved so much about this book that it wasn’t just another biography that I could have looked up on Wikipedia you also get hilarious jokes peppered throughout.
I do have to warn anyone that is sensitive to sexual innuendos this book is full of them. I, myself, am a little skittish around them and I am of the age bracket that he wrote this book for (I am assuming anyone under the age of 50). Of course I believe anyone can benefit from reading it because all the topics he is discussing are really what happens nowadays in the dating world but they just may not appreciate it as much because when written out it does read very foolishly. I can’t believe this stuff is real life I kept thinking to myself!
All in all I believe if you are already a fan of him it is fun that he tried a different way to present stand up material through book-form. If you are not familiar in his work I think “Modern Romance” is a demonstration of how quick, sassy, and endearing Aziz can be. I am so happy I picked this up to be my first book of 2016. I am pleased to start out my fresh beginning with a laugh!
