3.7 out of 4 stars.
It is the early 1900s in Ireland when this book begins. The reader does not stay there though. Through the stories told, we travel through County Kerry, Surry Hills, Ulster and New South Wales. All different locations but with the same core belief; that home is where one’s family is.
We are introduced to a long lineage of family history and it is followed by heartwarming and bittersweet stories that took place during this time period within this group of people.
The story begins with Nell, the only girl born into a tribe with 13 brothers! That in itself is enough to have tales out the gate. It isn’t until she falls in love with a man named Stevie that she feels she begins her own story.
Flash forward, to Nell’s granddaughter, Brigid, coming into her life and wanting to know her memories that would make her smile to reflect on.
More specifically, this novella was written to show a relationship between a grandmother and her granddaughter. Both love to listen and to write. Thank goodness for that because without people like them then we would lose all the charming details!
A small book in length, typical for a novella, but the reader doesn’t lose out on details. Even when the clothes were described as dirty and there wasn’t a lot of money for food, I still felt warm and at home reading each page.
Highly recommended and a lovely addition to anyone’s TBR because it will give you a nice history lesson in a matter of a few hours of reading.
