“One More Thing” – B.J. Novak

3.0 out of 4 stars.

I am ashamed to say that I was not completely on top of “The Office” so B.J. Novak’s work was a mystery to me. I had no idea what to expect when reading this compilation of short stories in, “One More Thing”. Quite frankly I don’t even read short stories that much!

I was most pleasantly surprised with how different he was able to make each story. I thought for sure each one would have some underlying pattern but no, completely different!

I write the way I speak. It is hard for me to alter my tone and come across differently while changing characters. However, for Novak it is a true delight to see him bounce around from the perspective of a senior citizen in one story to a child in another. What talent and wit!

He is SUPER quick to the point where I got lost sometimes because I would have to think a little too hard for each joke. He definitely will keep you on your toes with this read. My absolute favorite was a look at what Heaven was like and how a grandmother is too busy and popular to hang out with her grandson (sounds morbid but truly hilarious).

Of course with so many stories, the odds are that some are going to be a snooze-fest but I do believe the pros outweigh the cons. Above all Novak’s book is very creative and imaginative. Don’t blame me if you do come across some profanity and sexual innuendoes-you have been warned! All in all a fun literary ride to take!

I am a huge office fan! So naturally I was so disappointed when I was in the airport trying to read the first page of the book and I could barely understand it. All the words were blurring together haha. I might have to give it another try in a more low key setting than at logan airport.
