“Rescue Road” – Peter Zheutlin

3.8 out of 4 stars.

If you are on the hunt for an excellent book about dogs than look no further.

There are so many people who are bad dog owners but there are also so many people who try to make a dog’s life a better place. We can all do our part; whether it is taking in a rescue dog to our home forever or just to foster for a bit, make monetary donations, or in Zheutlin’s case spread awareness to this epidemic by writing “Rescue Road”.

In this story, we learn about Greg Mahle who is one of those people who feels they were put on earth to help. In Mahle’s case he complete all three (and more) of the efforts listed above to the most extreme factor.

Every two weeks, Greg drives up and down the Mason Dixon line retrieving abandoned, abused, and infected dogs and brings them up to the East coast so that they can get adopted by a loving family.

In order to write this story, Peter Zheutlin wanted to get right in the thick of  things so he can honor what Greg does every month and get the story accurately told. Let me just say it wasn’t always pretty to hear about the sleepless nights, poop stained clothing, and the excruciating accounts of  the way that some dogs are treated in America. I can only imagine what else happened that wasn’t fit to print. However, luckily for Zheutlin he only went on three trips. This is Mahle’s everyday life. Why would a man with a loving family at home choose to spend millions of miles on the road and sometimes in sleet, rain, unbearable heat, and snow?

“I may not be able to make a difference to all of them, but for some I can make a difference”. After reading this book, I believe Greg just can’t unsee what he has already seen and it would hurt him too much too stop when he knows he can help, and boy has he already! Greg Mahle has saved over 30,000 dogs !! The reader gets to meet a few in this book and they will each melt your heart.

When I write, I usually like to tell a personal story so the review isn’t just the facts but also a chance to get to know me. However, in this case, I don’t feel privileged enough to relate with Mahle. Yes, I love animals but I still feel like there is more I can do to help. until I am ready to give my two cents.

What I can say is, people know I a HUGE animal lover. Cough cough, hence:  Dogearedtails. My dear friend, Caroline Collett, rescued her dog, Finnegan, pictured below from THE Rescue Road Trips. Finnegan was left as trash in a landfill in Houston TX and later found, taken in and cared for by Peacelovedog rescue.

I have received a few followers on Instagram since creating my blog so I felt it was only write to tell a personal side of how Mahle has touched Caroline’s life and thus my life since she is such a close friend. Please help support the cause and creating awareness to abandoned/neglected animals.
